Dr Charanjit Singh Aulakh joined Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana as District Extension Specialist (Agronomy) at Rupnagar in 1995. Over the years, he has served in various academic and administrative roles, including Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, and Professor at the Regional Research Station, Bathinda, and in the Department of Agronomy. From 2017 to 2021, he served as the Director of the School of Organic Farming at PAU, Ludhiana, and in November 2023, he assumed the position of Dean, College of Agriculture.
With over 30 years of extensive experience in teaching, research, and extension, Dr. Aulakh has made significant contributions to agricultural education and innovation. He has taught eight undergraduate courses across 35 semesters and seven postgraduate courses over 22 semesters. As a mentor, he has guided four Ph.D. and eleven M.Sc. students as major advisor.
Dr. Aulakh is the author of nine books, two teaching manuals, and 22 book chapters. He has been actively involved in university life, participating in and organizing youth festivals, sports and cultural events, convocations, alumni meets, and more. He has served as Secretary of the Alumni Association of the College of Agriculture, Coordinator of the College Placement Cell, and President of the PAU-INSPIRE Club.
He has led numerous externally funded research projects in organic farming, Good Agricultural Practices (GAP), and Integrated Farming Systems (IFS). His work has resulted in the development of 52 production technologies across various domains including crop and cropping systems, organic and natural farming, integrated nutrient management, vermicomposting, weed management, biofertilizers, and zero tillage.
Dr. Aulakh has published 85 research papers in peer-reviewed national and international journals, along with four review papers, six conference papers, and two invited papers. His academic excellence has been recognized through three Best Research Centre Team Awards, three Best Paper Presentation Awards, and one Best Research Paper Award.
In the area of capacity building and outreach, he has organized 52 training programs and three certificate courses on organic farming, delivered 49 invited lectures, 249 training lectures, and 46 television and radio talks. Additionally, he has published 87 extension articles and six extension folders. He has been actively engaged in adaptive research trials (ARTs), frontline demonstrations, field days, produce competitions, and exhibitions at Kisan Melas and workshops.
Dr. Aulakh has participated in 132 national and international seminars, symposia, workshops, trainings, and conferences — including four international events held in the Philippines, The Netherlands, Mauritius, and Switzerland. As Director of the School of Organic Farming, he played a key role in securing two Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Govt. of India, and one Department of Science & Technology (DST), Govt. of India-funded projects. He facilitated a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Research Institute of Organic Agriculture (FiBL), Switzerland; established the ‘PAU-Organic Farmers Club’ and the ‘PAU-Aromatic & Spice Growers Club’; and developed the ‘PAU SAFEFOOD Production Practices’ — a certification programme for safe food production.
Dr. Aulakh has also served as an expert member on various committees of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), Department of Science & Technology (DST), Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR), and the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
