The Department of Botany came into existence in 1972. Teaching and research are the major mandates of the department. It offers courses for Integrated M.Sc. (Hons.), M.Sc. and Ph.D. programmes. The department trains students in plant physiology, anatomy, taxonomy, biosystematics, tissue culture, histochemistry, reproductive physiology, seed physiology and molecular biology. The meritorious students seek several fellowships such as INSPIRE Fellowship, Rajiv Gandhi National Fellowship, Maulana Azad National Fellowship, Women Scientist Scheme of UGC, Post Matric Scholarship, INSPIRE- SHE and PAU Merit Fellowship at M.Sc. & Ph.D. levels. The contributions in basic and applied research made by the department have been highly acclaimed and many faculty members have been honoured with various prestigious awards, i.e. Fellow of National Academy (FNA), Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Memorial, Professor Gunnar Erdtmann, Professor Hira Lal Chakravarty, Hari Om Ashram, Indian National Science Academy (INSA) Young Scientist and Academy for the Advancement of Agricultural Sciences Award (Gold medal and Citation) of Indian Society for Plant Physiology, and French Government High Level Fellowship. Degrees of the students are internationally recognized.
