Brief Introduction

Dr Nirmal Jaura joined as the Director Students’ Welfare, Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana on January 17, 2023. He is a popular and esteemed connoisseur of Punjabi literature, art, folklore and culture. He has made immense contribution towards the conservation of Punjab’s rich cultural and traditional heritage, both at the National and International fronts. Dr Jaura can be truly hailed as a linking tie between Punjab and the Punjabi diaspora, who inhabit various corners of the globe. Famously known as the “Glory of Punjab Heritage Programs”, he has been instrumental in organizing multiple cultural events to promote Punjab, Punjabi and Punjabiyat by the medium of theatre, workshops, radio and television programs. His passion for preserving the rich and diverse Punjabi heritage has taken him to foreign lands such as Canada, America, England and Australia with the mission to reconnect the contemporary generation with their ‘beginnings’ back home. He has spread the message of “From Routes to Roots” among the second and third generation of diasporic Punjabis, quenching their innate desire of ‘homecoming’.

Dr Nirmal Jaura joined the Punjab Agricultural University as Assistant Director in Communication Centre on March 2, 1993. Thereafter, he had a successful innings as Director Youth Welfare, Panjab University, Chandigarh, from May 2012 to May 2022. He holds the rare distinction of being at the helm of cultural programmes and Youth Festivals at the University, Inter-University, Zonal, Inter-Zonal, State, National and International levels. In view of his commendable achievements, the ‘Shaheed-E-Azam Bhagat Singh State Youth Award’ was conferred on him by the Government of Punjab in 1995.

Dr Nirmal Jaura graduated in Science from Government Barjindra College, Faridkot, following which he earned his M.Sc. and Ph.D. from Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana. He also holds the Master’s degree in Punjabi literature from Punjabi University, Patiala. He is a recipient of several National level achievements in academic and para-academic activities. As a student, he was declared the ‘Best Actor’, ‘Best Mono-actor’ and ‘Best Debater’ of PAU. His lustrous achievements established him as a talented artist through radio, television and stage programs in the early days of his student life. He was awarded the University Roll of Honor in the field of Theatre and Literature by PAU, Ludhiana.

Dr Nirmal Jaura is versatile and popular among people across all barriers of age, nationality and ethnic backgrounds. He has authored more than ten books on diverse themes of Punjabi theatre and culture, apart from current and global affairs. As Director Students’ Welfare, PAU, Ludhiana, he is committed to earn a place of international recognition in sports, cultural and literature arenas for the students under his charge.

Brief Introduction

Dr Kamaljeet Singh Suri, Joint Director Students’ Welfare at Punjab Agricultural University, has made significant contributions in the field of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) and agricultural extension. He has successfully handled 16 research projects funded by national agencies such as DST, UGC, MoA&FW, ICAR, NABARD, NRTT & SRTT, Punjab Government, and 40 pesticides’ industry-sponsored projects. With over 74 research papers, 3 review papers, 3 book chapters, 108 popular articles, 9 extension booklets, and several pamphlets and flip folders to his credit, he has substantially enriched agricultural literature. Dr Suri has contributed 72 recommendations to the PAU Package of Practices and has been instrumental in compiling and editing key publications, including the Brief Package of Practices in English and Hindi and the revision of Field Problems of Important Crops across four editions. A prolific communicator, he has delivered more than 170 lectures at Kisan Melas, field days, seminars, and training camps, along with 46 TV, Radio and PAU Facebook Live talks, besides preparing 6 awareness video capsules on judicious pesticide use. His strong liaison with state agricultural departments, NABARD, Punjab Agri Export Corporation, PAMETI, and other agencies has strengthened extension linkages. As a member of the editorial boards of Progressive Farming and Changi Kheti, and the advisory board of PAU’s Kisanbani programme, he continues to bridge research with farmers’ needs. Dr Suri also brings international exposure, having undergone advanced training at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, USA, which has further enriched his expertise and outlook.

Students’ Home

The Students’ Home building developed as a fully fledged central hub of cultural activities for the students of PAU, it was inaugurated by former Vice Chancellor Dr. M.S. Randhawa on 15th August, 1971. The primary objective of the Students’ Home is to utilize spare time of the students in the best possible manners by providing various facilities for their knowledge, comfort and relaxation.

The Building of Students Home consist of a large glazed reading room with comfortable sofas and tables for the sitting arrangement and racks for magazines and news papers in English, Punjabi and Hindi. It has an indoor auditorium with sitting capacity of 150 persons and Students’ Home Open Stage with the sitting capacity of 500 persons for organizing functions, seminars and parties of students and staff members. Art exhibitions are also being arranged for students and staff from time to time. Many canteens carter to the needs of the students, staff members and their guests by providing them hot and cold drinks, sweets and snacks. Stationary items, Photostat machines and other facilities are also provided near the complex. A free of cost internet facility is also available for the students.

The university provides free medical facility to its bonafide students. The office of Director Students’ Welfare issues medical files from the office of Students’ Home to the bonafide students of the University for their treatment in PAU Hospital. Stickers for the two wheelers (only for students) i.e. motor cycles, scooters, activa etc. to ensure entry in to PAU campus are also issued to the bonafide students of the university.

Conduct of NSO, NSS & NCC Programmes

Conduct of NSO Programme

Every student of bachelor’s degree course is required to opt any one programme among the three namely: National Sports Organization  (NSO), National Cadet Corps (NCC) and National Service Scheme (NSS) subject to the condition that NSO will be restricted to only those students who show marked proficiency in sports. Under this programme which is specially designed to develop the physical fitness level of the students through different activities and also to teach the various techniques, skill and tactics of particular games.

  • Full Tuition Fee Concession & Free Lodging, Full Tuition Fee & Half Tuition Fee Concession given to the students on the basis of their achievements.
  • Reservation of 5 per cent seats in different Bachelor’s and Master’s Programmes for outstanding sportspersons.
