Brief Introduction

Dr Harminder Singh taught more than 350 Cr Hrs of UG and PG courses, guided 17 M.Sc and 8 Ph.D students as Major advisor.  Published 6 books, 6 book chapters and 7 Teaching Manuals. Chairman of Academic Affairs Committee (Teaching) of CoH&F since 2019 and Deptt of Fruit Science since 2011. Member for revision of UG & PG courses as per IV &V Dean’s Committee, BSMA courses and designing NEP 2020 course curriculum for BSc (Hort). Member Board of Studies, Academic Council, Resident Instruction Committee and nominee of Dean Postgraduate Studies PAU Ludhiana.  Performed duties as paper setter/evaluator/examiner of UG & PG courses. Oral Comprehensive examination  and evaluation of Thesis/Dissertation of SAUs & IARI.  Conducted 2 ICAR sponsored Summer/Winter schools and conducted examination as a Centre Supdt. (12 times). Conducted Counseling of PAU UG and PG Programmes.Expert member for selection/promotion of scientists in SAU’s. Member Accreditation Committee of Dantiwara Agri Univ Palanpur, Gujrat. Chairman/Co-chairman of Anti-Ragging Committee of PAU. The vital contributions has helped in improving the productivity and quality of fruit crops through the development of superior cultivars and root stocks (Punjab Nectarine peach, Red Lady Papaya, Punjab Baramasi Lemon, Beauty Seedless Grapes, Plum rootstock Kala Amritsari and nematode resistant peach rootstock Flordaguard), canopy management (Y shape training system for peach, pruning and rejuvenation technology in grapes), high density planting in peach, quality improvement (potassium nitrate in plum and thinning and girdling in peach and grapes) and innovative  nursery production techniques (bud forcing in citrus, wedge grafting in mango and stenting technique in peach) for mass multiplication of fruit plants. My scientific contributions to the farmers are documented by inclusion of 30 findings in the Package of Practices for cultivation of fruits. Published 83 research papers, 3 review papers, 18 proceeding papers, Presented52 papers in Seminars/Conferencesand participated in 59 seminars/conferences/workshops. PI/Co-PI of 10 Externally Funded Projects funded by ICAR/NHM/NMB/UGC/DST amounting to Rs 3.14 crores. Published 70 popular articles in extension magazines, delivered79 lectures to HDOs/Asstt Prof. /Farmers, 13 TV talks& 19 radio talks. Conducted 82 visits and participated in 59 National Seminars/Conferences/Workshops.Conducted 25 training courses on Skill Development under RKVY & ASCI Govt. of India. Member Editorial Board of Progressive Farming/Changi Kheti. Organized 44 exhibitions during Kisan Mela’s/workshops/seminars and acted as Judge in Fruit Show cum Seminars. Permanant member for Inspection of Fruit Plant Nurseries in the state. Resource Person for Nuresry Production of Fruit Crops in PAU. Incharge PAU Fruit Plant Nursery from 2001 onwards and Incharge PAU Seed Farm (Horticulture section) for 15 years (2001 – 2015). Conducting Assessment and Auction of Fruit crops at all Fruit Research Stations. Incharge, Revolving Fund of Deptt of Fruit Scienceand Co-Incharge, Revolving Fund Scheme USF, Ladhowal. Produced more than 43 lacs healthy and disease free nursery fruit plants which had played a major role in the expansion of area under fruit crops in the state. Generated an income of more than 16.65 crores. PAU nursery was accredited at National level with 4 star rating twice by NHB, Govt. of India.

    • Establishment of Mother Plant Nurseries for high pedigree planting material of Fruit Crops (funded by NHB)
  • Standardization of high density planting and Canopy architecture for higher productivity and better fruit quality in low chill peach (funded by UGC)
  • Fund for improvement of S&T infrastructure in universities and higher educational institutions  (funded by FIST-DST)
  • High resolution mapping and development of root-knot nematode resistant rootstocks in peach (funded by DST)
