Important Achievements
- 1962 – Foundation in Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana.
The Extension Wing became an integral part of PAU, enhancing institutional support for extension activities. - 1963 – Launch of Agricultural Extension Training Programmes.
Organized trainings began for field-level functionaries and farmers to promote scientific agriculture. - 1965 –
▪ D. Extension Education program introduced.
Doctoral-level education program began to enhance research in the extension discipline.
▪ Adult Farmers Club (now Kisan Club) established.
One of the outstanding endeavour of the department was the birth of Adult Farmers Club with a meager strength of 12 members from village Barewal in Ludhiana district (1965) which later on blossomed into PAU Kisan Club with a present membership of 6344 farmers. - 1967 – Introduction of Kisan Melas.
Large-scale farm fairs were started to demonstrate new technologies and interact directly with farmers. - The department has made a significant contribution in diffusing the production technology of high yielding Mexican wheat amongst the farmers of Punjab ultimately leading to green revolution in the State.
- 1971 – Correspondence Courses Unit started in the department.
A one-year correspondence course was introduced to extend agricultural knowledge to farmers and rural youth remotely. (Now discontinued) - A course in home management and family life for farm women was also introduced in 1974. (Now discontinued)
- 1972 – Demonstration Project for Organising Farm Youth Clubs
A rural youth development initiative launched to form Yuv Dals (youth clubs) in high and senior secondary schools across Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Patiala, and Kapurthala. The programme targets boys and girls aged 13–25 years, including youth actively engaged in farming. It aims to transfer farm technologies through the youth using “learning by doing” and “earning while learning” approaches, fostering personality development, scientific outlook, and community problem-solving skills. - A special integrated course in agriculture for small and marginal farmers was launched in 1976. (Now discontinued)
- 1977–78 – Start of Teacher Education Programme (B.Ed.).
Aimed at preparing professional teachers in agricultural extension and education disciplines. - 1980 – Formation of Indian Society of Extension Education – Ludhiana Chapter.
Provided a professional platform for extension scientists and educators to promote research, collaboration, and academic exchange in the field of Extension Education. - Youth Development Programmes –
Included Farm Youth Clubs, Three-Month Young Farmers’ Training, and Rural Youth Volunteer Corps; aimed at developing leadership and vocational skills among rural youth..
2021- Farmer Information Centres: A total of 12 Farmer Information Centres were established across different blocks of Ludhiana

- T. S. Riar is presently serving as Additional Director Communication at Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana.
- On January 17, 2023, Dr. Nirmal Jaura joined as Director Students’ Welfare at Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana.
