Devastating floods have caused massive damage to paddy fields in Kapurthala district, with nearly 7,000 acres in Dhilwan and 30,000 acres in Sultanpur Lodhi submerged. The standing paddy crop, which forms the backbone of the region’s agriculture, has been completely destroyed, leaving farmers in severe distress and uncertain about their livelihood.
To assess the extent of damage, experts from the Punjab Agricultural University-Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Kapurthala, visited the flood affected villages of Dhilwan and Sultanpur lodhi blocks. The team interacted with farmers and extended motivational support, assuring them that they are not alone in this crisis. Farmers were encouraged to remain resilient, with the confidence that institutional and scientific backing would be available during the recovery process.
As the floodwaters recede, PAU-KVK has outlined a contingency plan to support farmers in the coming months. The plan focuses on rehabilitating waterlogged fields, restoring soil health, and preparing for the next cropping cycle, ensuring that the farming community can return to agricultural activities at the earliest. A broader recovery roadmap is also being prepared to safeguard farm livelihoods and reduce the long-term impact of this natural calamity.
Farmers of Dhilwan and Sultanpur Lodhi expressed gratitude for PAU’s and PAU-KVK, kapurthala timely intervention, stating that the visit not only acknowledged their heavy losses but also gave them hope and direction for the future.
