Bioenergy Demonstration Area

Demonstration Area is set up for the demonstration of latest technologies developed by DREE. It houses different types of biogas plants, solar water heater and solar dryer. It also has an engine section where 100% biogas engines and dual fuel engines are available.

Biomass Densification laboratory

The preparation of briquettes from chopped paddy straw (100%) using Briquetting machine and Shredder.

Solar Energy Workshop

Solar Energy Workshop is an important component of the department. The workshop houses a facility for manufacturing and testing of solar thermal energy gadgets for research work under AICRP on Renewable Sources of Energy for Agricultural and Agro-based Industries. Instruments such as pyranometers, temperature indicators, temperature controllers, turbine air flow meters, orifice air flow meter, pressure drop gauges, energy consumption indicators, power indicators, weighing balance, oven, etc. are available. The workshop is also extensively used for UG practical and ELP classes.

Biomass Analysis Laboratory

The Biomass Analysis Laboratory houses the equipments for analysis of bio-chemical and thermo-chemical properties of different solid/liquid/gaseous samples especially agricultural crop residues etc. A Bomb Calorimeter of MAC make is used for analysis of gross heating values of various samples. The laboratory also has an Elemental Analyzer (EuroVector EA-3000) for analyzing carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, sulphur and oxygen present in different biological samples. To analyze (identify and quantify) volatiles, toxicants, indoor air, petroleum hydrocarbons, organo-metallic compounds and natural or agricultural products, the laboratory has two Gas Chromatograph machines (Nucon GC-5765 and PerkinElmer Clarus 500). The laboratory also has Flame photometer (Elico CL-361) for inorganic chemical analysis for determining the concentration of certain metal ions such as sodium, potassium, lithium, calcium, Cesium, etc. The laboratory is also equipped with Flash Point Apparatus (Tanaka APM-7) for measuring flash points of different substances according to standard test methods.

Biogas Laboratory

The Biogas Laboratory was set up in the Department of Renewable Energy Engineering with a view to develop efficient biogas technology from various biomass sources, especially cattle dung, poultry droppings and paddy straw. In this laboratory, various biomass related analysis like proximate (total solids, volatile solids, ash and total organic carbon) and chemical (cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin and silica) analysis are being conducted. Paddy straw pre-treatment (physical, chemical, biological and enzymatic), value addition of bio digested slurry for industrial enzymes production and bioprospecting microalgal strains for biogas and nutraceutical production are the prowess arena of the lab. Lab-scale biogas production experiments are being run in the lab from pretreated paddy straw. Biogas Laboratory is equipped with fibretech analyzer, kjeldahl apparatus, UV-Vis spectrophotometer, deep freezer, cooling centrifuge, muffle furnace, hot air oven, laminar air flow chamber, BOD incubators and microwave etc.

Pathak Energy Workshop

Pathak Workshop Biomass Houses Biomass Analysis laboratory, Solar Energy Teaching Laboratory and Biofuel laboratory.

Biomass Analysis Laboratory

The Biomass Analysis Laboratory houses the equipment for analysis of bio-chemical and thermo-chemical properties of different solid/liquid/gaseous samples especially agricultural crop residues, etc. The laboratory houses a Bomb Calorimeter for analysis of gross calorific value and an Elemental Analyzer (EuroVector EA-3000) for analysis of  elemental carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, sulphur and oxygen of biomass samples. To analyze (identify and quantify) volatiles, toxicants, indoor air, petroleum hydrocarbons, organo-metallic compounds in natural or agricultural products, the laboratory has two Gas Chromatograph machines (Nucon GC-5765 and PerkinElmer Clarus 500). Solar Energy Teaching Laboratory

The laboratory is meant for UG and PG practical classes. It is equipped with Solar Photovoltaic and Solar thermal teaching unit to aquatint the students about different parameters that affect the performance of photovoltaic system and solar thermal unit for water heating.

Biofuel laboratory

A biofuel laboratory has been set up to conduct biochemical analysis related to liquid (bioethanol) and gaseous fuel production (biohydrogen). The laboratory houses Orbital shaking incubator, BOD incubator, Soxhlet extraction unit, Laminar flow chamber, Ultrafiltration assembly, UV-visible spectrophotometer, Tissue homogenizer for biochemical analysis and laboratory scale production of biofuels.
