The Department of Renewable Energy Engineering (earlier known as School of Energy Studies for Agriculture/ School of Renewable Energy Engineering) was established in 1984 for effective planning and implementation of its programme of advanced training, research and development in the field of Renewable Energy. A number of research projects funded by various State, National and International organizations such as PSEB (Now PSPCL), PEDA, PSCST, ICAR, MNRE, TERI, DST, FAO/UNDP, UGC, BARC, NTPC etc. have been successfully completed. The mandate of the department is to develop and disseminate integrated renewable technologies viz., solar, biogas production, biomass briquetting and liquid biofuel technologies. The current areas of research are ex-situ utilization of agricultural residues for energy production such as biogas, bioethanol, bio-hydrogen, biodiesel, briquetting, pelletization and torrefaction; solar thermal energy utilization for industrial and agricultural applications. The department is also working on energy management in agriculture. The department offers PhD programme in Renewable Energy Engineering.
