Brief Introduction

Dr. Sohan Singh Walia earned his M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Agronomy from Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana. He began his career at PAU as Assistant Professor in 1995 and rose to the position of Principal Agronomist in 2010. As a Ph.D. student (2001–04), he initiated pioneering research on organic farming at PAU and continued to work extensively on organic and integrated farming systems under national-level projects.

Dr. Walia has over 650 research and extension publications, 20 books, 11 teaching manuals, 7 extension folders, and 28 book chapters to his credit. He has led 30 research projects and is presently handling five. His contributions led to the inclusion of organic farming and integrated farming systems in PAU’s Package of Practices in 2004–05 and 2017–18, respectively. He has developed 97 practical recommendations for farmers, including resource-conserving cropping systems, nine organic farming-based systems, and direct seeded rice technology. His work also includes crop-specific microbial consortium applications and integrated nutrient management, especially in maize/soybean and rice residue management.

Dr. Walia developed an Integrated Farming System (IFS) model incorporating dairy, fishery, horticulture, vegetables, agroforestry, and vermicomposting. He has taught 93 courses, guided six Ph.D. and twelve M.Sc. students, organized 32 training programs, delivered 88 invited and 460 training lectures, and participated in 94 TV and radio programs. He has also attended ten international and 90 national academic events.
